Manage assessment questions to evaluate business strategies. This helps tourism operators identify strengths and weaknesses, informing tailored growth strategies. For example, categorise questions by business pillar to pinpoint areas needing improvement in marketing or operations.

Accessing this feature

Go to the Altitude Programme dashboard. Select Assessments from the left-hand navigation menu to view all active and draft assessments. Click on the specific assessment you wish to manage, then select Manage Questions to access the question editor.

How to use it

Managing Assessment Questions ensures the integrity and relevance of your evaluations. Follow these steps to create, modify, and organise assessment questions:

Go to the Question Editor:

  1. As outlined in the Accessing This Feature section, locate and select the desired assessment, then click Manage Questions. This will display the current list of questions associated with that assessment.

Add a New Question:

  1. To introduce a new question, click the + Add New Question button. A window will appear, prompting you to define the question's parameters.

  2. Question Text: Enter the full text of the question clearly and concisely.

  3. Question Type: Select the appropriate format (e.g., Multiple Choice, Open Text, Rating Scale, Checkbox List). This selection determines the response mechanism for participants.

  4. Category: Assign the question to a relevant strategic category (e.g., Marketing & Sales, Operations, Financial Management) to ensure organised data analysis.

  5. Weighting/Scoring: If applicable, define the points or weighting for the question, particularly for multiple-choice or rating-scale types, to contribute to an overall assessment score.

  6. Options (for Multiple Choice/Checkbox): For questions requiring predefined answers, add each option individually. Specify if an option is correct or provides a specific score.

Edit an Existing Question:

  1. To modify a question, locate it in the list and click the Edit icon (typically a pencil). The question's parameters will become editable.

  2. Make the necessary adjustments to the text, type, category, or options, then click Save Changes.

Reorder Questions:

  1. Questions can be reordered to improve the flow of the assessment. Use the drag-and-drop handle (often represented by a set of dots or lines) next to each question to reposition it within the assessment sequence. Ensure logical progression for the participant.

Duplicate Questions:

  1. To quickly create a similar question, select the Duplicate icon next to an existing question. This creates an exact copy, which you can then edit to adjust specific details without starting from scratch.

Delete Questions:

  1. If a question is no longer relevant or was added in error, select the Delete icon (typically a rubbish bin). A confirmation prompt will appear to prevent accidental deletion. Once confirmed, the question will be permanently removed from the assessment.

Preview the Assessment:

  1. Before finalising, use the Preview Assessment function to review the questions as a participant would experience them. This step is crucial for identifying any formatting issues or logical gaps.

Save and Publish:

  1. After all questions are finalised and reviewed, click Save to store your changes. If the assessment is ready for deployment, select Publish to make it accessible to participants.

Key Capabilities

Assessment Questions offer robust capabilities designed to support comprehensive and effective strategic evaluations:

  • Diverse Question Types: Implement a range of question formats, including multiple-choice, open-text responses, rating scales, and checkbox lists, to gather varied qualitative and quantitative data. This flexibility allows for a understanding of participant responses.

  • Customizable Scoring and Weighting: Assign specific scores or weightings to individual questions or response options. This enables precise calculation of assessment outcomes, highlighting areas of high performance or critical development needs.

  • Categorisation and Tagging: Organise questions into logical categories (e.g., by business pillar, strategic objective, or competency area). This facilitates granular reporting and targeted analysis, helping to identify patterns across different operational aspects.

  • Question Bank Functionality: Develop and maintain a centralized repository of questions. This allows for efficient reuse of high-quality questions across multiple assessments, ensuring consistency and saving time in assessment development.

  • Version Control: Track changes made to assessments and individual questions over time. This capability supports auditing, maintains historical data, and ensures that assessments remain relevant and up-to-date with evolving industry standards.

  • Conditional Logic (Branching): Implement logic that displays subsequent questions based on a participant's previous answer. This creates a highly personalised and relevant assessment experience, streamlining the process by avoiding irrelevant questions.

  • Rich Text Editor: Use a rich text editor for question text and answer options, allowing for formatting, inclusion of links, and embedding of media where necessary to provide context or clarity.

Tips

To maximise the reliability of Assessment Questions, adhere to these practices:

  • Use clear and concise language in your questions. Avoid jargon, double negatives, or complex sentence structures that could lead to misinterpretation.

  • Each question should focus on a single concept. Ensure every question directly aligns with the overall objectives of the assessment. Irrelevant questions can dilute the assessment's focus and increase participant fatigue.

  • Phrase questions neutrally to avoid leading participants towards a particular answer. Maintain an objective tone to elicit honest and unbiased responses, crucial for accurate evaluation.

  • Distribute questions across all critical strategic areas or competencies the assessment aims to evaluate. Avoid over-representing certain topics while neglecting others to ensure a balanced overview.

  • Periodically review all assessment questions to ensure they remain relevant to current industry trends, regulatory changes, and the evolving needs of tourism businesses. Outdated questions reduce the assessment's value.

  • Before full deployment, conduct a pilot test with a small group of representative users. Gather feedback on question clarity, assessment flow, and time required for completion to identify and rectify any issues.

  • Design questions with the end goal of data analysis in mind. Think about how responses will be aggregated, reported, and used to inform actionable insights for businesses.

  • For complex or nuanced topics, provide a brief introductory statement or context alongside the question. This ensures participants have the necessary background to provide an informed response.

  • Categorise questions logically for easy analysis. Regularly review and update your questions to ensure relevance. Pilot test your assessments before deploying them to all users. Consider the data you want to collect when designing your questions.
