controls who can view and edit your files and folders. This secures sensitive business data, such as guest lists or pricing information, by limiting access to authorised staff and protecting guest privacy, ensuring compliance and data security.

Accessing this feature

REQUIRES_DEVELOPER_INPUT - The navigation path to file permissions needs to be verified.

How to use it

Managing file permissions involves selecting the target file or directory, assigning specific access levels to different user categories, and saving the configuration. Go to the File Permission Configuration interface using the navigation path outlined in the "Accessing This Feature" section above. This displays your file and directory structure.

Selecting a File or Directory

  1. Browse through the directory tree to locate the specific file or directory for which you wish to modify permissions.

  2. Click on the desired item. Its current permissions are displayed in the main content area.

Identifying User Categories

The system categorises users into distinct groups for permission assignment. Examples include:

  • Owner

  • Group

  • Other

  • Specific roles

Assigning Permissions

  1. For each user category (Owner, Group, Other, or specific roles), you will find checkboxes or toggle switches corresponding to Read, Write, and Execute permissions.

  2. Select or deselect the appropriate permissions to grant or revoke access. For example, to allow the file's owner to read and write, but only allow the group to read, you would check 'R' and 'W' for Owner, and only 'R' for Group.

Applying Permissions to Subdirectories (for Directories)

When setting permissions for a directory, you have an option to "Apply permissions to subdirectories and files." Selecting this option spreads the newly configured permissions to all files and subdirectories nested within the selected directory. Use caution when using this feature, as it can significantly alter access.

Saving Changes

After configuring all desired permissions, click the Save button. The system processes your request, and the updated permissions take effect immediately.

Verifying Permissions

It is recommended to verify the applied permissions by attempting to access the file or directory with different user accounts (if possible) or by reviewing the permission settings again after saving. This ensures your intended access controls are correctly implemented.

Tips

  • Always grant the minimum necessary permissions required for users or systems to perform their tasks. Avoid granting excessive access, particularly Write or Execute permissions, unless absolutely essential.

  • Regularly review file and directory permissions, especially for sensitive data or after significant changes to user roles or system configurations. This helps identify and correct any unintended access.

  • Understand Directory vs. File Permissions: Permissions on a directory control access to the directory itself (e.g., listing contents, creating new items), while permissions on files within that directory control access to those specific files.

  • Configure default permissions for new files and directories to align with your organisation's security policy. This reduces the risk of new content being unintentionally exposed.
