Images Not Uploading

Great images are essential for showcasing your tourism experiences. If you're having trouble uploading images, let's work through the common issues and get your photos displaying beautifully.

Quick Checks

Before diving into detailed troubleshooting:

  • Check your internet connection – Uploads need a stable connection

  • Verify file size – Images must be under 10MB (we recommend under 5MB for faster uploads)

  • Check file format – Supported formats are JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WebP

  • Try a different image – The specific file might be corrupted

Common Upload Errors

"File Too Large" Error

Your image exceeds the maximum file size:

How to reduce file size:

  • On Windows:

- Open the image in Photos - Click the three dots menu > Resize - Choose a smaller size

  • On Mac:

- Open in Preview - Go to Tools > Adjust Size - Reduce the dimensions or resolution

  • Online tools:

- Use free tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh - These compress images without noticeable quality loss Recommended image sizes:

  • Hero images: 1920 x 1080 pixels

  • Gallery images: 1200 x 800 pixels

  • Thumbnails: 400 x 300 pixels

"Invalid File Type" Error

The file format isn't supported:

Supported formats:

  • JPG / JPEG (most common, recommended)

  • PNG (good for images with transparency)

  • WebP (modern format, smaller files)

Not supported:

  • HEIC (common iPhone format) – convert to JPG first

  • TIFF

  • BMP

  • RAW camera files

Converting HEIC to JPG (iPhone photos):

  • On iPhone:

- Go to Settings > Camera > Formats - Select "Most Compatible"

  • On Mac:

- Open the HEIC file in Preview - File > Export - Choose JPEG format

  • On Windows:

- Use a free converter like "HEIC to JPG" - Or upload to iCloud and download as JPG

"Upload Failed" Generic Error

This can have several causes:

  • Network interruption:

- Check your internet connection - Try again with a stable connection - Avoid uploading on mobile data if possible

  • Browser issues:

- Try a different browser - Clear your browser cache - Disable browser extensions temporarily

  • Session expired:

- Refresh the page - Log in again if prompted - Retry the upload

Upload Taking Too Long

Optimise Your Images First

Large images take longer to upload and slow down your website:

  • Resize images to appropriate dimensions before uploading

  • Use compression tools to reduce file size

  • Aim for under 2MB for most images

Upload Fewer Images at Once

If uploading multiple images:

  • Upload in smaller batches (3-5 images at a time)

  • Wait for each batch to complete

  • Don't navigate away during upload

Check Your Internet Speed

Upload speeds are often slower than download speeds:

  • Test your connection at speedtest.net

  • Upload speeds under 5 Mbps will be slow for large files

  • Consider uploading during off-peak hours

Images Upload But Don't Display

Clear Your Browser Cache

Your browser might be showing old cached content:

  • Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+Delete (Mac)

  • Select "Cached images and files"

  • Clear the cache

  • Refresh the page

Check Image Processing Status

After upload, images may take a moment to process:

  • Wait 30 seconds to a minute

  • Refresh the page

  • Check if the image appears now

Verify Upload Location

Ensure you're looking in the right place:

  • Check your media library

  • Navigate to where you uploaded the image

  • Look in any "recently added" section

Image Quality Issues

Images Appear Blurry

This usually means the original image was too small:

  • Upload higher resolution images

  • Minimum recommended: 800 pixels on the shortest side

  • For hero images: at least 1920 x 1080 pixels

Colours Look Wrong

This can be a colour profile issue:

  • Ensure images use the sRGB colour profile

  • Convert from CMYK (print format) to RGB (web format)

  • Use photo editing software to change colour profiles

Images Are Rotated Incorrectly

Some images have rotation data that isn't always read correctly:

  • Open the image in an editor

  • Manually rotate to correct orientation

  • Save and re-upload

Mobile Upload Issues

iPhone Photos Not Uploading

  • Check HEIC format:

- iPhones often save as HEIC - Convert to JPG before uploading - Or change iPhone camera settings to "Most Compatible"

  • Try the browser:

- If the app isn't working, try uploading via web browser - Use Safari or Chrome on your iPhone

Android Photos Not Uploading

  • Check you've granted storage/photo permissions

  • Try uploading from your gallery instead of the camera

  • Use Chrome browser for best compatibility

Browser-Specific Issues

Chrome

  • Clear cache and cookies

  • Disable extensions (especially ad blockers)

  • Try incognito mode

Safari

  • Check Settings > Privacy > Prevent cross-site tracking is off for uploads

  • Clear website data

  • Update Safari to the latest version

Firefox

  • Disable Enhanced Tracking Protection for this site

  • Clear recent history

  • Check that JavaScript is enabled

Edge

  • Clear browsing data

  • Try InPrivate mode

  • Disable any security extensions
